This is a still from the latest trailer for E.T. - the trailer for the upcoming October Blu-ray 30th Anniversary release, that reveals that the guns are back in Steven Spielberg‘s masterpiece.
The infamous digital replacement of the guns by walkie talkies in 2002′s 20th Anniversary edition seems to have been ‘put right’, if the trailer is anything to go by – which is usually the case.
Speculation is – that returning to the original negative for the Blu-ray conversion meant going back to the original film – with shotguns, and Spielberg thought that the negative feedback from the walkie talkies was so great that it wasn’t worth digitally reinserting them again.
It raises an interesting question for fans – whether it’s better, after ten years, with walkie talkies, and the subsequent explanation from Spielberg with the rational and believable ‘it’s not great to have guns versus kids’ argument, or without.
Personally, I like seeing the film in its original form, reflecting Spielberg’s intentions at the time.
